Wow, I have spent the last half hour reading through some of my blog posts from the last few years and I am so thankful to have this “journal” with my experiences in it!
As an update to all of this: I graduated the Bachelor of Education program last June (2014) after completing an amazing practicum with Mrs B (not me ;)). After graduation I got married (!) and became Mrs Bergen, no more Miss Parfitt. The day before my wedding I had my TOC training and after our honeymoon I was TOCing basically full time!
After TOCing for about 2 months, I was hired in a 0.5 contract (2.5 days/week) at my first practicum school; my elementary school! I was hired as a classroom support, as well as to help regroup a group of 4/5 students during their math block. I teach my own math to a group of 17 grade 5 students and I absolutely love it! In January of this year, my contract grew from 0.5 to a full 1.0: I am now teaching every single day and I could not be happier.
My position includes lots of pullout with essentially all grades K-5 as well as two prep classes where I am teaching grade 3 Art and grade 6 Drama.
We are now counting down the days till summer (25 teaching days left!) however that leaves me with some uncertainty for the next school year. My hope is to be offered another temporary (which means not continuing) contract at the same school as I love both the students and staff there. I feel so lucky to have spent this past school year teaching at my dream school!
My hope is to get back into blogging about my experiences as a brand new teacher 🙂

Wow, Valentines Day! What an amazing day to be a teacher, you truly feel the love when you have 22 little cards in your hands.
We spent the morning making cards for our buddies and handing out our own Valentines. After lunch it was party time! The students brought treats and we watched a movie. It was a fun day and the energy in the room was palpable!
I cannot believe how quickly my practicum has gone by. There have undoubtedly been stressful times, like every Monday when my Faculty Advisor comes to evaluate me, and yesterday when my principal did the same, but it’s been an amazing ride! I am so incredibly thankful for my placement and my mentor teacher. She has been wonderful beyond words, I cannot thank her enough for the support she has shown me these past few weeks.
Finally, I gave my blog a bit of a seasonal update today. I realize it’s only mid February, but where I am it’s been sunny and mild and I am so ready for Spring!!
Thanks for stopping by,
Wow, I can’t believe the first week of my practicum has come to an end!! This week I taught 3 poetry lessons that I am so pleased to say went really well.
I was evaluated by my Faculty Advisor on Monday – my very first lesson – and although she had the wrong copy of my lesson plan, it went smoothly and she was happy with my performance! It was such an accomplished feeling knowing that my evaluation was out of the way at the beginning of the week and I had the rest of the week to spend with just Mrs B and our students.
Speaking of Mrs B, I am so thankful to (again) have such an incredibly supportive mentor teacher. I feel like I have been so blessed with such wonderful placements over the past two years and I know that I have two friends for life.
Next week, it ramps up to 60% teaching load, and I will be responsible for Language Arts, Math & Science.. bring it on! My next evaluation is Monday afternoon, so if you think of it, feel welcome to send positive, encouraging vibes my way! 😉
Happy New Year, everyone!
This winter break has been one of the most relaxing I have ever experienced. I hardly worked due to a lack of shifts and this made me feel more like a teacher than ever before, it was fantastic. I lesson planned here and there, but mostly laid low with family and visited with friends – it was bliss.
Now, however, we’re back into the swing of things! Today was the first day back and it was great. The kiddos were happy to see me and I had a great day with my new mentor teacher, Mrs. B. I am really excited to jump into my practicum next week when I’ll be taking over all of Language Arts!! I’m doing a unit on Poetry and am feeling very confident in the unit I’ve laid out. I can’t wait to experience it with my class.
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, more blog posts to follow as I get going with practicum!
Thanks for stopping by,
I have officially made the transition to a new host school and I am thrilled with my placement. My 2/3’s are a wonderful group of bright kiddos and I am very much looking forward to teaching them in the new year! I will be taking on Language Arts, Math, Science, PE and HACE, three of which I did not teach last year, and I am ready for the challenge and excited to teach new subjects.
School ended last Friday – hooray! – so I’ve been visiting my host school everyday this week. Today marks the beginning of my unit planning, and my goal is to have it DONE by December 21st! I want to relax and enjoy some of the wonderful holiday season before getting back into the groove in January and I think my goal is perfectly reasonable. Just going to require some hard work 😉
Speaking of holiday season, I’d like to add that this is my absolute favourite time of year. The music, the smells – my peppermint Scentsy is makes our place smell glorious – everyone just seems to be happier! Christmas cheer is all around 🙂
It’s the most, wonderful time of the year!
Hello everyone 🙂
There have been some changes happening in my life lately, the most prominent one being a change of sponsor school! After some juggling, I am now in a new school and a new class, grade 2/3! I am very excited to meet my brand new kiddos next week, as well as a new mentor teacher! Flexibility and adaptability are two very desirable qualities in a teacher, and I am ready for the change!
Another change happening in my world is school is coming to an end
hallelujah darn 😦 😉 This upcoming week is our last as University students and I think I speak for most of my colleagues when I say that it is a relief to be done. This has been a packed semester and we are ready to start planning for our practicum and submersing ourselves in our sponsor schools! 2014 is going to be an exciting year for us ETEP 2’s 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, I’ll post again next week after I’ve met my new class!
